Inyathelo strengthens NPO sector with useful AI training

webinar 2Cape Town, 5 June 2025 – Inyathelo, the South African Institute for Advancement, says the correct use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools can significantly impact sustainability in the NPO sector, and they have developed a series of webinars to guide the sector through this new territory, with the next one scheduled for 19 June 2025.

An introduction to AI for NPOs webinar was recently held, and Jacques Swart, operations co-ordinator, specialising in Generative and AI-Enhanced Data Analysis & Insight, and presenter of the training, ensured participants understood what AI can and cannot do for their organisation and how to navigate effective Prompt Engineering to ensure better outcomes.

With many NPOs grappling with limited resources, understanding optimal use of AI tools to lighten the load and produce smarter, more targeted and efficient funding proposals and grant correspondence had NPOs champing at the bit to attend the training.

“Non-profit organisations are sitting on a goldmine of data, from annual reports and donor records to financials, surveys, and CRM systems. Therein lies the opportunity to interrogate that data and use AI to make the most of it,” said Swart.

“The next webinar, entitled Data Analytics for NPOs will make sense of some of the data by tapping into the possibilities of AI, quickly, accurately, and with real-world insights. Whether it's identifying patterns in donor behaviour, improving reporting processes, or simply getting a clearer picture of what’s working, AI-powered data analytics can be a game-changer,” he said.

Topics to be explored during the session include:

  • Introduction to Advanced Data Analysis
  • Core Operations and Demonstrations
  • Effective Interaction Strategies & Prompting
  • Handling Complex Tasks and Large Data/Outputs
  • Frameworks for Applying Data Analytics
  • Practical Advice and Best Practices

“Inyathelo is committed to strengthening the sector and building resilience. Smart and responsible use of AI tools can significantly improve the efficiency of NPOs in fundraising, programme delivery and operations, ultimately impacting their sustainability,” said Feryal Doming, Inyathelo Acting Executive Director.

Domingo explained that the inaugural training session was offered to the sector at no cost, but that the more advanced training would require a minimal contribution of R249 to cover overheads.
