Unintended consequences of the Financial Action Task Force recommendations for the non-profit sector in South Africa

Inyathelo, The South African Institute for Advancement, is conducting a survey of nonprofit organisations in South Africa to better understand how international financial regulations, particularly the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recommendations, are affecting the sector. We would value your participation in this survey.

While the FATF recommendations aim to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing, they can also lead to unintended consequences, such as increased scrutiny, restricted access to banking services, and administrative burdens for organisations. This survey seeks to document these experiences and assess the overall shape, size and financial positioning of the sector within both the South African and global contexts.

Your participation in the survey is both voluntary and anonymous. We do not ask for your organisation's name, or any identifying information besides your email address, and shall be reporting the results of the survey in a way that readers will not be able to identify your organisation. The survey should take between 15 and 30 minutes to complete, depending on which organisational category you fall into. The vast majority of questions are closed-ended, meaning that you will select boxes without having to explain your answers.

We look forward to receiving your responses to the survey questions by 20 June 2025.
