Beyond Sports

Western Cape non-profit organisations (NPOS) that use sport to help uplift youth in disadvantaged communities got a welcome boost in July when 24 fit and enthusiastic students from America and England volunteered their services for three weeks. They were linked to Beyond Sports, an organisation set up seven years ago to create opportunities for student athletes to enjoy life-changing cross-cultural experiences.

Sharing their love of sport are Mac Hennessy from Philadelphia, Sahara Gipson from New Jersey, Lauren Kudronowicz from Wisconsin and Nicole Liddy from southern New York, Stephaun Marshall from New Jersey and Cassie Meyers-Anacortes from Washington.

Much of the students’ time was spent passing on valuable sports and life skills, but off the field they gathered for regular team-building, research and planning sessions at the Woodstock, Cape Town offices of Inyathelo, the South African Institute for Advancement.

Beyond Sport Site Director (South Africa) Nawaal Nacerodien said: “This has been a great opportunity for 22 American and two English students to broaden their horizons and help local NGOs. Thank you Inyathelo for providing a welcoming space.”

Kate McDonnell of San Diego State University said: "Inyathelo provided a quiet space, focused atmosphere, and an endless amount of resources that helped my team to be successful."

Jasmine Hickman of Tennessee Wesleyan University added:  "Inyathelo gave us a comfortable environment to work in, along with great staff!" Stephaun Marshall of Temple University in Philadelphia said:  "@Coolplay.SA Interns (2017) would like to thank Inyathelo for providing the space and environment that allowed us to maximise our time, energy and ideas here in Cape Town."

“Our Civil Society Sustainability Centre, conveniently located in the heart of Woodstock, was made possible by a generous donation from The Atlantic Philanthropies,” said Inyathelo Executive Director Jessica Rees-Jones. “We were delighted to share our resources with the students.

“Inyathelo offers numerous facilities and services for NPOs, such as training and workshops, databases of local and international funders, and conference and work space for hire. Please feel free to contact us to find out how we can help make a difference in your organisation.”
