Inyathelo pays tribute to Archbishop Desmond Tutu

A tireless campaigner for human rights and social justice, Archbishop Tutu was a charismatic leader who was often the first to speak out about inequality and wrongdoing. He was a leader in the fight to end apartheid and continued to provide a moral compass for South Africa and the world. As chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, he presided over hearings that revealed both the worst and best of humanity. A founding member of The Elders, he worked unstintingly with other global leaders for peace and human rights.

Both Archbishop and Mrs Tutu are former Inyathelo Philanthropy Award recipients, specifically the Indima-Tema Philanthropy award, announced in 2010. This name was derived from isiXhosa and Sesotho, loosely meaning making a mark, or leaving a trail. At the time it was noted that the couple had made an indelible mark and left a strong and particular trail, both in philanthropic activities and numerous other spheres.

Inyathelo honours this great leader, who was widely recognised for his courage, his sense of humour, his ability to hold leaders to account, and his faith and hope for humanity. May his wise example continue to inspire us all.
