Inyathelo provides lessons in proposal writing for long-term sustainability

20 June 2017

Many non-profit and non-government organisations (NPOs and NGOs) and higher education institutions are in urgent need of financial support – making the importance of writing excellent funding proposals more vital than ever.
To meet this need, Inyathelo (The South African Institute for Advancement) recently held two proposal writing workshops. This first, dedicated to NPOs, took place at Inyathelo in Woodstock, Cape Town on 23 May.
A second workshop, specifically for fund-raisers working for higher education institutions, took place at Inyathelo the following week, tailored to universities involved in the Kresge-Inyathelo Advancement Initiative Programme.
This long-standing programme aims to develop and bolster the private fundraising and Advancement efforts of universities in South Africa. Advancement is a multi-layered, integrated approach to attract resources for optimal sustainability.
“Many NGOs and tertiary institutions are doing excellent work that is worthy of funding,” said Inyathelo Programme Manager Nazli Abrahams. “In this crowded arena it is therefore vital to craft persuasive, tailored funding proposals that stand out and are aligned with donors’ priorities.”
Inyathelo Executive Director Jessica Rees-Jones said: “Advancement is an integrated approach to engaging the external environment and positioning an organisation to attract support. Inyathelo offers a range of skills-development opportunities – including workshops, seminars, informal discussions, peer-learning sessions and conferences – to help organisations mobilise resources and remain sustainable.”
